Illustrator, artist and designer of children's books and novelties
Bettina Paterson is an illustrator, artist and designer of children's books and novelties. She was born in London and grew up in Hampstead, North London and then in Yorkshire. She studied Visual Studies and Art History at Oxford Brooks University, followed by a post-graduate degree in Illustration at St Martin’s College of Art, London. After graduating she began designing cards and posters for the Conran Design Group which led to her first picture book, ‘Bun and Mrs Tubby’, published by Orchard Books.
She has illustrated over 50 children's books which have been published in the USA, South America and throughout Europe. These include pre-school, baby books and picture books. Many of these feature a novelty design aspect such as ‘lift the flap’, ‘touch and feel’, magnetic pieces, press out characters and puzzle pieces. Lift the flap books include the ‘Little Busy Books’ range and ‘Jigsaw Animals’, both published by Campbell Books. Touch and Feel titles include ‘Furry Jungle’ and ‘Fluffy Farm’, also by Campbell books.
Bettina is well known for her torn paper collage illustration, and her use of mixed media involving collage, fabric and gouache, She often designs her own novelty concepts and characters, such as the recently published ‘Dressing Up Wardrobe’, by Egmont UK. She has created many animal characters for her books, including Little Hippo for a range published by Scholastic UK.
She lives with her husband, son and
daughter in London, and works from a
studio in her home.
